July 4 2018 Pull List Gender Imbalance Report

Jemal’s Pull List Gender Imbalance Report: 19 books with zero women! 4 with at least 1! 111 men to 16 women this week! Terrible! That pulls the books with women way down to 17.4% and the total number of non-male creators down to 12.6% this week. Ghastly.

It’s admittedly a weird week. Batman #50 is a wedding celebration with every recent bat-artist on board, which means 29 men and 6 women. If that seems bad, remember that @beckycloonan was the first woman to draw Batman in his title book in 2012. 73 years with no ladies! But 6 out of 35 is higher than the overall average, so good job kinda? Ugh. Get your shit together @DCComics.

SPEAKING OF WHICH: DC’s Catwoman #1 is out, written and drawn by @Joelle_Jones, with colors by Laura Allred and it looks AMAZING. If you’ve been reading Batman recently, you’ve seen Jones’ dynamic, balletic action and incredibly rich character work. Those eyes!

The only other books I picked up with women involved were “Shade The Changing Woman” and “Marvel Rising: Squirrel Girl & Ms. Marvel.” The former is a trippy alien-fish-out-of-water story and the latter is for little kids. DON’T JUDGE ME.

But enough about people getting it right! Who’s letting us all down? Time to name names! Time to shame…Fames….ous people?

Mark Waid has 2 books this week, Doctor Strange and Ant-Man & the Wasp, neither with a single non-male creator. I expect better. Ant-Man & the Wasp is a (sorta) tie-in book to the summer blockbuster opening this week that also features a Strong Female Protagonist. Just like the movie, Wasp is the smarter, cooler, more capable hero who has to look after that putz Ant-Man. And no women on the team? With a name like Mark, a movie with a big marketing budget, and a great new-ish character, they should have gotten a woman penciller. Who? @RenieDraws would be great, @e_charretier would kill it and knows the character, @kate_niemczyk would have a fresh take, @Marvel.

@BRIANMBENDIS is wrapping up Man of Steel this week and still can’t seem to find a woman artist or letterer at @DCComics. There’s a joke to be made that they need somebody they can underpay to make up for his verbosity, but I’m too disappointed to do it.

Brian K. Vaughan has a new issue of Paper Girls and 22 issues in, it’s still a book about girls written and drawn by boys. That’s a guy who has worked with Pia Guerra AND Fiona Staples. He knows great female artists. He works with them! He’s smart and cool! /

@Remender’s Death or Glory #3 is out and the book is about a woman with that woman on the cover but not a woman in the credits. His Low ended up being mostly about women and women’s relationships, but I can’t remember any women on that creative team either.

@jasonsaron is a good guy but he sure works with a lot of men. In fact, 6 men get their names above the title on Avengers this week.

@JeffLemire has another Black Hammer spin-off book this week, “The Quantum Age.” I hope it’s great! I hope he finds a woman to hire! Has there been a single woman on interiors for any of the expanding Black Hammer universe of books? Great books, but…

Anyway! That’s the sexist week that was. Hit me up with any statistics/spreadsheet suggestions or a hashtag I should use!

Note to newbs: I get a lot of books, but I try to get a) good ones b) by diverse creators. These are just what I picked up this week. Caveats: my spotty research (sorry); gender binary sucks; no covers/no backups; only writers, pencillers, inkers, colorists, letterers.

Final thought: July 4 launch of a new Captain America run by one of America’s best writers and comics’ best artists and…no ladies. ????

(No white dudes on the interiors either, which is nice, but…)
