June 20 2018 Pull List Gender Imbalance Report
This week’s pull list gender disparity numbers! 23 books with all men, 13 with at least 1 woman, 138 men to a mere 17 women! Pathetic!
Percentages: 36% of books have at least a single woman, 11% of creative types are women overall. Current long term: 38% and 14%. Trends: a little below average in general, but not out of the ordinary. It’s worrying how stable these numbers are.
I should probably start tracking women’s job titles, but most of the women on my pull list are working as writers or colorists. I’m mostly talking about Jordie Bellaire, Rachelle Rosenberg and Tamra Bonvillain. They often have multiple books in a given month/week. That means that if you compared how many individual women are working in a week instead of per book, the numbers would be much worse.
What’s also disappointing is that, though I’m not tracking it, the indies aren’t meaningfully more lady-friendly than the big two/three. I talked to @LizzieJump about what would be on my list if I cut out all men, and I think it’s just Lumberjanes, Moonstruck & Nancy Drew. Are there other all-lady/non-binary books I should be reading? Good ongoing books with women on art? Any women doing lettering at all?
If I cut out all the books with no women I would a) save a ton of money, b) have to drop a lot of superhero books with rotating teams.
Caveats: my spotty research (sorry); gender binary sucks; no covers/no backups; only writers, pencillers, inkers, colorists, letterers.
Now with a chart:
