Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks was born in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1913. After finishing college, Rosa Parks moved to Montgomery, Alabama with her husband, and there, joined the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP serving as a secretary from 1943 to 1956. On December 1, 1955, after work, Rosa Parks paid her bus fare and proceeded to an empty seat in the "Colored" section of the bus. When a white man boarded the bus and was standing in the aisle, the bus driver asked Rosa Parks and three other black patrons to give up their seat. Rosa Parks refused and was arrested; this sparked the Montgomery bus boycott. After the boycott was a success, on December 20, 1956, buses were desegregated.
